Pretty low key and relaxing… this place has seen better times. But for a great experience of an old-style Amsterdam coffeeshop this is the place. Take the Damstraat from the Dam Square to find this place, on the Oude Hoogstraat – reputed to be Amsterdam’s seediest street 10 years ago – now an oasis of shops and fun.

The Otherside

THE Gay coffeeshop on THE Gay street. Small coffeeshop, lots of men, and great Space Cake to be found here! Very small place, often crowded.

Old Church

Nice outside seating opposite from the entrance to the Oude Kerk. A great place to hang in the shade and watch the tourists and “johns” on their way to the red-lit cabins in the narrow alleys that surround the old church. Keep your eye out for the especially gorgeous babes on their way to “work” in the afternoons and evenings.

If you’re lucky you’ll get serenaded by the Church bells during your visit!

Pink Floyd

This used to be one of my favorite places to visit when I came to this side of town.

I recently went by to check out the reptile room. The snake was gone already, with only one lonely turtle stuck in a glass topped table. But I was able to hang out in a room by myself (a rarity anymore), while a long Bob Marley set played through some great Bose speakers.

I was curious about their menu since they showed “Ice” hash on it. I tried to ask the dealer about it, whether it was Ice-O-Lator, but he didn’t have a clue what I was talking about! So I had to explain to him how it was made. He showed me a box that had many different types and colors of Ice-O-Lator, and it smelled really rank (moldy). It is a BIG no-no to mix various hashes especially when somethings gone off. So I’m revising the rating on this place (down) because they could at least get in someone who knows what they’re selling, and store it properly!

I still think this is an interesting place to hang out in on this side of town, but I’d think twice about buying any smoke here…

Theeboot (closed)

This coverted houseboat on a canal makes an interesting coffeeshop. The inside has been redone and the fresh paint makes a big difference, but it’s best to visit on a warm, sunny day (good luck!) when you can sit on the deck and take in the good view.

THIS LEGENDARY COFFEESHOP IS NOW CLOSED!

Baba

The Baba Coffeeshop is right at the entrance of the notorious Red Light District in Amsterdam. A good place to watch the interesting sorts who visit or dwell in the area. The view from the window down the Warmoesstraat is one of the more interesting in Amsterdam. Decent menu and selection of drinks to keep you happy. However several times recently, I opened the door, heard pounding hard house music and quickly left. If you like that sort of music, check it out.

Extase

The small Coffeeshop Extase is located in the Red Light District, the Oude Hoogstraat. Fresh orange juice, loud music, clouds of smoke and interesting characters abound here! Lots of windows, plants and flowers make this a cheery place. But more comfortable seating would really help out, as the wooden stools get old quickly.

Very good Moroccan Hash. Try the King Hassan if they’re still selling it (heard it has a new name, now that King Hassan has died).

Rusland

Funky little shop with great vibes and a fine selection of hash and grass. The afghan bud was sweetly memorable, and I enjoy hanging out here and letting the world go by. Recently redone, with beautiful glass lamps and decorations. Downstairs is a display of amazingly beautiful handblown glass pipes. The Rusland is on one of A’dam’s quietest streets, but in a great location near the center of town.

Check out their excellent Nederhash and their wonderful selection of bulk teas. The Edelweiss is super!

Kadinsky

Hip little spot right off the Spui. I love the vibes, the music (a treat to hear K&D chant about bug-powder dust while getting high) and the grass. Some of the tastiest, at good prices. Nice to sit at the big open window on sunny days and watch the people go by. Cappucino was great, and I will return for more of that bud. They offer an Internet terminal for the customers to use as well.
