The first female I grew I had some problems with in 18/6, but I think most of this was due to the soil I was using (bog-standard compost bought at a local DIY store.) The fan leaves kept dying, but overall the plant was healthy.
When I switched to 12/12, she began to put on a stretch, the gap between fan leaves was about 3-4 inches, although the rest of her lower growth was much better-proportioned. She also grew very odd-looking calyx on her stems, which had me worried about possible hermaphoroditism quite early on, although nothing came of it.
All in all she did not seem very stable. At this point in the grow, I had completely changed her soil to coconut-fibre based stuff which saw a dramatic improvement in overall health but she was still a very tall and skinny lady.
She started flowering about a week after being switched to 12/12 and started really packing on the weight in her buds from week 4 onwards. She had very tall lanky buds, convered in trichomes on both the top and the underside of leaves and stems, and a pleasant sweetish smell, faintly lemony or like dried flowers. There was a good-sized cola and the side branches also produces some good buds considering she was not trained. From weeks 7-8 she did not put any more weight on her buds, but things began to ripen up ready for harvest 63 days after being switched to 12/12. She was given 36 hours of darkness at the end, and was flushed for the last week of growth.
The second Nirvana Special was far more stable in 18/6, and had a much better all-round structure with better distrbution of internodal growth, and less of a strech to it, however, this plant was vegged under metal hallide, and had better soil from the outset, so conditions may have helped. She showed pre-flowers at week 5 under 18/6 schedule (I like to veg them a little longer, usually around 6 weeks) and was moved under 12/12 at 6 weeks.
She also had the same calyx structures oh her main stem, however this time they did become hermaphrodite flowers, and she was pulled from my grow at 3 weeks of 12/12. From my experience, I'd say this plant is quite unstable, the second plant was grown in spring, so there was a tiny amount of light getting into my growroom during the dark period and my timer also packed in, so these are things you want absolutely perfect to cut down on the possibility of it going hermie on you.
The smoke:
Nirvana Special is a lovely-tasting grass. Not harsh at all on the back of your throat, and a very sweet-tasting grass, again, reminds me of the smell of dried sweet flowers. Very cerebral smoke, you feel this one in your temples and the front part of your head, and comes on quickly. Not really something you'd want to smoke in the dead of winter when your stuck indoors. I felt pretty creative and spent ages drawing after a joint of Spesh. I also thought the yield was pretty decent from a 250w HPS (38 grams). The grass is certainly decent, but I wouldn't bother with this strain again, because I would be constantly on tinterhooks throughout flowering.
